In response to my cross-posting of Armed Liberal's excellent "Iraq'd" article (our "Best Of..." category now has a new entry), someone in The Command Post left this in his signature. When you read it, do you think of this too?
"There Morgoth stood at last at bay, and yet unvaliant. He fled into the deepest of his mines and sued for peace and pardon; but his feet were hewn from under him, and he was hurled upon his face.... and the evil realm was brought to naught, and out of the deep prisons a multitude of slaves came forth beyond all hope into the light of day, and they looked upon a world that was changed." -- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion

Wha- was Beleriand too obscure? You could have weeded out all us LOTR nerds...
Or was it that Angband, strictly speaking, was not in Beleriand?
Ahem. Yea, LOTR nerds.
Both reasons, David.
Though Cirdan the Shipwright is quick to remind us that after the Dagor Bragollach, Angband's residents did spend rather a lot time in Beleriand. Guess he's still pissed about Morgoth's armies coming all the way down to the sea, burning down the Havens around him, and forcing him to relocate to Balar.
FYI, for those who aren't Lords of the Ring experts but who saw the movie... remember Sauron, the major bad guy? He was Morgoth's underling.
Let's hope the part that comes just after that ("...and Sirion was no more.") doesn't have a parallel in our future.
"Oi! Maedhros! We can see you; put that Silmaril back now! And where do you think you're off to, Gorthaur?"
The movies jumped up Sauron's personal power rather too much, I'd say. (And improperly minimized the glory of the Last Alliance leadership.)
We are talking about a guy* who got beaten up by a dog, now...
(*see note 2)
By the way, is there a link to the crosspost? I couldn't find it when I last checked out CP.
