Dear Bill,

Sorry to hear about the bypass, but better now than later. Please get well soon - there's a lot in store for your country, and they'll need you in the years ahead.

The Republicans don't like to admit this, but your combination of likable, roguish southern Good Ol' Boy and slick Daniel Webster lawyer type fuses a pair of classic American archetypes that can help the USA in the years ahead (just as Democrats can't admit that Dubya's combination of easygoing regular guy and cowboy lead-with-deeds-not-words archetypes are also classsic Americana with a valuable role to play).

P.S. The crowd that President Bush addressed didn't boo you, they cheered for your recovery. AP was lying, and here's the sound clip to prove it (455k, MP3). Patterico also has more well-wishes from right-leaning bloggers to brighten your day.

Best Wishes for a speedy recovery you are in our thoughts and prayers. It's not an easy thing to go though I had the same operation five years ago and here I am and you are younger. God bless you from all the Fagans and hurry up and get well. Love from the Fagans in N.C.
