Rathergate: Sic Transit Hailey
by Joe Katzman at October 1, 2004 5:44 PM
Yesterday's Media Watch post linked to a new expert weighing in on Rathergate, who claimed that the documents look like they were typed after all. David E. Hailey, Jr., Ph.D. is Associate Professor and Director at the Interactive Media Research Laboratory at Utah State University. He looked like he had a pretty good set of credentials, and his study appeared quite extensive.
Then, he met the blogosphere. Wizbang showed that some of his "evidence" was... uh... not authentic. The University has now taken his whole site down, and is investigating.
Of course, Mary Mapes of CBS had been forwarding his study to questioning reporters....

History repeats itself: first as Tragedy, second as Farce.

If I was in CBS and Rather's shoes I'd really want to put the whole matter to rest. The closer we are to Nov 2, the more so...
Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:
*This* puts text in bold.
_This_ puts text in italics.
bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.
To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
Finally, note that a constant onslaught of Trackback spams from auto-generated blogspot blogs has forced Winds to ban the blogspot.com domain from use in comments or trackbacks. If you host on blogspot, consider moving; otherwise, the complaints need to be directed at Google not us.
