Once Upon a Time in the West (Midlands)

by Adil Zeshan

ENGLAND. THE YEAR, 2007.

My name is Adil. I have been born and raised among dutiful and obedient Muslims, and I aim to misbehave.

Already I have fallen from grace. I am no longer one of them, a reason sufficient for their delicately-placed wrath to have me consigned, in this world and the next, to the most grievous of penalties; for what else should the reward be for those who behave like me, they would say if they knew, but disgrace in this life? So no matter where I go in the realms of Islam, I am a hidden traitor to my people, a renegade without honour to be executed. And for them to know of my apostasy is to know of their fear.

Still, now and again I silently walk among the Muslim flock, to observe their incessant bleating and guilty straying, and see how readily they run to the call of their watchful masters, appointees of God who oversee the enjoining of what is good and the forbidding of what is not. And they remind the herd that He is not unmindful of what they do.

Neither am I.

It's the State, stupid!

by Nitin Pai

A debate over matters of faith is drawing attention away from a very necessary debate over matters of international politics

Even as the world grapples with the threat from radical Islamist terrorists and watches with concern---both silent and noisy---of a 'return to the roots' movement among the world's Muslims, a good part of the debate has focused on whether or not Islam is as peaceful as many of its moderate adherents claim it to be (via Desipundit). As Retributions points out in a recent post, the debate over the tenets of Islam is misdirected. It is also misleading and ultimately counter-productive for it plays into the very hands of those who benefit from both Islamist terrorism and from the war against it.

Hatewatch Briefing 2006-09-01 (July-Aug 2006)

by Hatewatch

Welcome! This briefing will be looking hard at the dark places the mainstream media sometimes seem determined to look away from, to better understand our declared enemies on their own terms and without illusions. Our goal is to bring you some of the top jihadi rants, idiotarian seething, and old-school Jew-hatred from around the world, leaving you more informed, more aware, and pretty disgusted every month. This Winds of Change.NET HateWatch briefing is brought to you by Omri Ceren of Mere Rhetoric. Past briefings and posts on related topics can be found here.

As with the previous briefing, this post traces two months of global trends. Hopefully this will be the last time that we'll impose upon you such a long wait between these less than cheerful missives. We've tried to organize articles and analysis so as to highlight particular tendencies and trajectories that we suggest are causes for concern. If this is not your cup of tea, that's only because you didn't have to sift through Daily Kos posts to write this briefing. If you had, you'd know that by New Years the Democrats will have impeached Bush, Cheney, and Ronald Reagan. Nancy Pelosi will have been carried into the White House on the shoulders of netroots activists singing netroots songs, where she will have learned that Osama Bin Laden had come out of hiding and was racing to the United States in order to turn himself. Riding on a unicorn. A very fast unicorn.

Actually, to be totally honest, we're not really sure why he uses a unicorn in this story. There might have been an explanation (maybe the unicorn is really reliable or something) but the sewing needles that we were using to try to gouge out our eyes were blocking the screen. Maybe they meant a Pegasus, because that's the one with wings. Whatever - even with the weird unicorn thing, you have to admit that you feel less anxious knowing that populist grassroots liberalism is going to save us all.

HIGHLIGHTED TOPICS

Kennedy might be a hypocrite; Huffington Post writers include some actors, a few racists, and a lot of anti-Bush lunatics who have just totally lost it; Jimmy Carter needs to just shut the hell up; Sept. 10 mindset provides left with security, self-righteous feeling of superiority; Everyone's got conspiracy theorists on their side - ours just happen to be smarter, not crazy; Al Gore invents idea of decentralized network of decentralized citizen journalism to save democracy; The most perfect metaphor for leftist activism ever; Unless you're using the left's definition of patriotism, then yeah, some of them were probably not very patriotic on the 4th of July; Cindy Sheehan continues to innovate the English language by changing definition of "lying", "fasting"; Deborah Frisch is a deeply disturbed woman who may need to be locked up; If we're not going to execute MSM leakers for treason, how about for making offensively bad arguments; Mathematical proof that journalists will always find a way to blame Jews

The "Peace" Movement

by Demosophist

TigerHawk has maintained for some time that the so-called "anti-war movement" is actually more like an anti-victory movement. It appears that the trend he noticed is creating some cognitive dissonance for a few genuine peace activists, like Mark LeVine, Professor of Middle East History at UC Irvine. Fretting over the recent petition in the Guardian he wonders:

According to the signers, the best approach is to “offer our solidarity and support to the victims of this brutality and to those who mount a resistance against it.” Support for those who mount resistance? What exactly does this mean? Are my heroes Noam and Howard planning to pick up an RPG and start firing southward from the rubble of Qana? Should progressives be donating money to Hamas? Learning to crawl through tunnels and ferry the latest Iranian missiles to the front?

This Briefing covers two months of global trends. We've tried to condense news articles in such a way as to highlight particular tendencies and trajectories that we suggest are causes for concern. But don't be alarmed - you'll be OK as long as you keep telling yourself that it's just a small handful of extremists in control of several large Arab and Muslim countries, that University campuses are bastions of free expression, and that Iran is probably just kidding about the whole nuking Israel. In other words, pretend you're a UN diplomat and you'll finish this post unpreterbed.

The Israel Lobby and Anti-Semitism

by Joe Katzman

Prof. Eliot Cohen, of Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, discusses Harvard's John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt's paper "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy":

"Oddly, these international relations realists -- who in their more normal academic lives declare that state interests determine policy, and domestic politics matters little -- have discovered the one case in which domestic politics has, for decades, determined the policy of the world's greatest state. Their theories proclaim the importance of power, not ideals, yet they abhor the thought of allying with the strongest military and most vibrant economy in the Middle East. Reporting persecution, they have declared that they could not publish their work in the United States, but they have neglected to name the academic journals that turned them down.

Inept, even kooky academic work, then, but is it anti-Semitic?"

He goes on to dissect some of the papers more obvious faults, omissions, and double-standards, then sums up:

Every Way to Paradise

by Joe Katzman

From "The Sufi Soul" by William Dalrymple:

"The Tablighis are now probably the largest Muslim missionary movement in the world, and advocate a return to the basic fundamentals of the Koran. They greatly dislike Sufism, the mystical face of Islam, and believe that Sufi shrines like that of Nizamuddin encourage such un-Koranic practice as idolatry, music, dancing and the veneration of dead saints. With his dark skin, wispy beard and narrow eyes, Amin did not look like a Delhi-wallah. He was an aircraft maintenance engineer from Dacca [JK: Bangladesh] who had come to Delhi [JK: India] to learn more of the teachings of the Tablighis, and to help preach what he considered to be the proper ways of Islam....

“So,” I asked, “what do you think of the Sufi idea that God can also be found in the human heart?”

“Paradise within us?” said Amin, raising his eyebrows. “No, no: this is emotional talk - a dream only. Is there evidence for this in the Koran? Real Islam is more disciplined than that: there are rules and regulations that must be followed: how to eat, how to wash, even how to clip your moustache. There is nothing in the Koran about paradise within the body. It is outside. To get there you must follow the commands of the Almighty. Then when you die, insh’allah, that will be where your journey ends.”

Here, it seemed to me lay some sort of crux - a small but vitally important clash of civilisations, not between East and West, but within Islam itself. Between the strictly regulated ways of the orthodox Tablighis and the customs of the heterodox Sufis lay not just two different understandings of Islam, but two entirely different conceptions of how to live, how to die, and how to make the final and most important, and difficult, journey of all - to paradise."

If you want to understand the Sufis a little bit better, Winds' "Sufi Wisdom" category offers a bit of a window. But now it's time to shift from India to places beyond, and to focus on the Salafists, Hojjatieh, and their ilk rather than the Sufis. For that, however, what we need isn't an expat but a shrink. Several, in fact, as we look at Islam's einsatzgruppen, the psycho-mechanics of death cults, and how G-d is drawn....

CENTCOM's Gen. Abizaid's Status Reports to Congress

by Joe Katzman

General John Abizaid (the name is Lebanese, if you're wondering) is in charge of CENTCOM, which includes the Iraqi and Afghan theaters as well as Iran, Syria, Lebanon, et. al. He testified to Congress this week about the "force posture of Central Command," which translates roughly into Canadian English as "So, like, what's doin', eh? How's it goin'?" (If the speaker is not from Toronto, they may actually want to know).

If you're serious about what's going on in this war, you owe it to yourself to read it, rather than letting potentially unreliable sources tell you what's in it. Some of the topics include "Nature of the Enemy," "Situation Overview in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa," "Other Regional Partnerships," and "Iran and Syria." Here's a couple of quick excerpts and a link.

I'm also a fan of reports from lower down the food chain. So here are a couple, good and bad, focused on Iraq. Plus an idea that makes moral and tactical sense:

Psychosis or Terrorism at Public University?

by athena

The on-campus incident at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where an Iranian graduate attempted to kill students by running them over with a rented Jeep, has raised questions about defining terrorism. The perpetrator, Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, claimed he was doing the "will of Allah" and acting to avenge the treatment of Muslims in the US.

This weekend I traveled back to my alma mater and spoke with someone who knew Taheri-Azar. More interesting details come into view including heavy drinking and drug use.

(More in-depth coverage is cross-posted at Terrorism Unveiled)

Islamofasicsm: Hamas' Sturm Und Drang

by Joe Katzman

Some on the liberal-left are bothered the term Islamofascism. It intrudes on their constructed reality. So let's begin with the latest from Iran and Saudi Arabia's friends in Hamas, before comparing it to another familiar little ditty.

According to a new video just released on the official Hamas Web site, images of Israelis being evacuated from Gaza and destroyed Israeli buildings are shown while these words are sung. Here's the translation:

"The invaders fled.
The army of the Jews has been defeated
The home and homeland is returning through blood [shows Haifa]
Not through negotiations, surrender or promises" [shows clip of peace agreements]

Allah the Great,
Be pleased by the sound of thunder...!
We will never accept the enemies
In the land of our fathers...

Burning Cars, Burning Girls

by Joe Katzman

One of the grumbles I often hear is that Western feminists have ignored the issue of womens' rights in Islamic communities and countries - or have openly sacrificed them in the name of the left's idea of multiculturalism. There is some truth to this; nevertheless, there are also counterexamples. Or perhaps signs of a slowly-dawning epiphany, who knows?

Sign and Sight has a translated essay from Alice Schwarzer, one of Germany's most prominent feminists. She wrote an article recently in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Its core thesis?

"The riots in the French suburbs are taking place in an atmosphere rife with male violence where girls and women live in fear. If we really want to address the problem of burning cars, then we must also tackle the problem of burning girls."

Support for this proposition comes from the other side of the political spectrum. The British conservative writer Theodore Dalrymple has observed the problem first hand in his British medical practice, and says much the same thing.

The Forever War Isn't About Us

by Joe Katzman

Noah Shachtman has been in Iraq lately, and his Iraq diaries over at DefenseTech.org make for insteresting reading. One item in particular stood out: Captain America In The Forever War, which sums up the conversations he's been having with the soliders on the front lines lately. He dropped me a line at DID asking what I think. I responded by email. He suggested I share. OK. We'll start with Noah:

"Democracy? Here? Are you f--ing kidding me?" one sergeant laughed, as we drove near the Abu Ghraib prison. This was from a guy from helped safeguard the January round of elections. He figures the place will collapse into civil war as soon as U.S. troops leave.

But he's glad he's in Iraq, regardless. Mostly, because of the insurgents."

I said almost a year ago that our greatest saving grace in this war is our enemies, and I've kept on saying it because it remains true on so many levels. This truth is being demonstrated on a smaller scale in Iraq, and on a larger scale by Iran.

An Excellent Article on The New Anti-Semitism

by Joe Katzman

I've linked this December 2001 article a couple of times on Winds, but I've never given "An Old Story" the full dignity it deserved as a stand-alone post. Now I have. It offers a fine summary of anti-semitism's various forms throughout history, and notes:

"...every age begets the anti-Semitism that most suits it; and in this era of anti-racist enthusiasm, it is anti-Zionism. In all ages, the goal of the anti-Semitic project is to delegitimize Jews. In this one, it's to undermine the legitimacy of the Jewish state, as a prelude to its ultimate destruction. The "fairness" that Palestinian supporters advocate has the ultimate goal of sufficiently weakening Israel that it will be unable to defend itself. And without a Jewish state, the iron truth of history is that the Jewish people sooner or later become even more vulnerable to the next wave of anti-Semitism. The metaphor of Exodus is one that has dogged the Jews from the outset. Their very success attracts resentment - as they learned in Egypt where, according to Scripture, a new king arose "who did not know Joseph." The issue is no longer, Will there be a Palestinian state - that is inevitable - but rather, Will there be a Jewish one? The disappearance of the Jewish state will not mean the disappearance of anti-Semitism - quite the opposite."

Still relevant today. Read the whole thing.

Zimbabwe Changed My Mind: Guns Are A Human Right

by Joe Katzman

arms & speech

As many of you know, I'm from Canada. We have a pretty different attitude to guns up here, and I must say that American gun culture has always kind of puzzled me. To me, one no more had a right to a gun than one did to a car.

Well, my mind has changed. Changed to the point where I see gun ownership as being a slightly qualified but universal global human right. A month ago in Yalta, Freedom & The Future, I wrote:

"Frankly, if "stopping... societies from becoming the homicidal hells Mr. Bush described in his Latvia speech" is our goal, I'm becoming more sympathetic to the Right to Bear Arms as a universal human right on par with freedom of speech and religion. U.S. Secretary of State Condi Rice's personal experience as a child in Birmingham [Alabama] adds an interesting dimension; I hope she talks about this abroad."

This week, I took the last step. You can thank Robert Mugabe, too, because it was his campaign to starve his political/tribal opponents and Pol-Pot style "ruralization" effort (200,000 left homeless recently in a population of 12.6 million) that finally convinced me. Here's the crux, the argument before which all other arguments pale into insignificance:

The Right to Bear Arms is the only reliable way to prevent genocide in the modern world.

And Zimbabwe is the poster child for that proposition. So let's start with what's going on:
